Meet the founder and creative director of Moss Living

Based on Queensland’s gorgeous Gold Coast, Moss Living is passionate about luxury bedding, wearables, and ceramics. When she’s not busy infusing ceramics with magic and soul, you’ll find Christina with sand in her pockets and salt in her hair.

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do?

As an introvert I sometimes find it difficult to talk about myself - you’d think by 44 I would have learnt this! Haha. Anyway, I’m the Founder and Creative Director of Moss Living, a luxurious bedding, homewares and clothing label based in beautiful Currumbin Beach. I wanted to create something that can give others a sense of pure luxury in its simplest form, utilising the beautiful and sustainable fabric of linen. Sleep, to me, is one of the most important health necessities in life, especially in this day and age when everyone is so busy being busy and living in the “fast lane.”

Since 2018 when we started Moss Living we’ve evolved from a primarily bedding collection into linen wearables. Enjoying the best of both worlds of comfort and style for both your home and your body.  I also hand make my own range of ceramics, and find the most creative joy in this side of the business, getting to create and bring to life something with my hands. When you buy a Moss Living ceramic piece you are purchasing it straight from me in my home studio. Art is one of my biggest love affairs in life, from a very early stage of adulthood I would try to go to as many art showings and galleries around and I worked hard to save money and start my collection of art pieces. I have always lived by the motto ‘support your local artists’ and I always will.

What is your favourite part of your work?

Seeing an idea come to life! I’m a very visual person and when something you create over time finally comes to fruition, that to me is one of the most fulfilling parts of my work. Also, happy customers! From very early on in my career, customer service has been my main priority and that moment when you know you have helped someone and that they love your product as much as you’ve loved creating it, that’s what it’s all about.

With global conversations around climate change, and 'sustainability' becoming such a huge buzz word, especially in the fashion and homewares industries, what changes have you seen in the way your customers purchase design pieces?

Simplicity is the key to sustainability; less is more, less landfill and less destruction of the Earth. It is at the centre of our business and why we chose to use linen throughout our bedding and homewares ranges because it’s the most sustainable fabric there is. While conventional materials are created using pesticides and harmful chemicals, chemical-free farming enriches the land, uses less water, is safe for the farmers and promotes a healthier biodiversity. We encourage everyone to shop with intention and we hope to promote a positive change in the environmental landscape of our industry. We see our customers purchase our pieces knowing they will last them a lifetime, and that our ceramics are made to order, reducing the wastage that comes with over-supply. We’re not perfect, but we believe in taking one step at a time to be better, and do better.

Thank you so much for collaborating with us, do you have a favorite piece in our collection?

I just adore your beautiful designs and love how our brands can connect and work together. I’ve always LOVED the Coulee Design Daybed. The intricate detail of contrasting textures all utilising deep earthy tones just gets me every time. I can see it sitting so beautifully by my window that gets drowned with morning light as I sip my coffee.

Can you tell us more about the pieces for the giveaway? What was the inspiration?

This collection was inspired by our home on beautiful Currumbin Beach. We have the most pristine beaches in the world, and this collection really paid homage to this. As a society we focus a lot on the “perfections'' rather than loving imperfection, and in this collection you have exactly that - perfect imperfections.

Where would you place your beautiful pieces at home? Do you like it  'minimal' or 'more is more'?

I had a conversation recently with a photographer about this exact question and whether our ceramics are suited for minimal or not-so-minimal spaces. The beauty of creating your own style is that it doesn't really matter. As much as I’d love to one day live a minimalist style in my home, we currently have more of a ‘more is more’ style and saying that our ceramics suit both! It’s really a personal moment to find that perfect spot to have our ceramics in your home and we love seeing where our customers place theirs.

Getting into Christmas vibes, how do you celebrate Christmas?

Christmas to me isn’t about the hype and the gifting, but spending time to slow down and enjoy it with your loved ones. Both my fiancé and I have lost most of our family in recent years so we just take it as another day but take that time to relax and enjoy what we have, which is each other. I’m also not averse to a good Christmas carol so these are always playing throughout our house in December.

How does intentional gifting make you feel?

For me, intentional gifting is and has always been the truest form of giving. In a world where consumerism is at an all-time high, this is paramount in my business and why I wanted to create something made from linen; the most conscious material. It’s buying, sharing and gifting pieces that you know your loved ones will treasure and need. It’s supporting local businesses and knowing that your purchase has really made an impact on someone's life. Intentional gifting is about purchasing those special pieces that will last a lifetime, not a season.

What wisdom would you share with your younger self?

I have experienced so much in my life, especially throughout my younger days. If I was to give my younger self wisdom it would be these few tips;

  • You can always say ‘No’.
  • When you feel scared that’s the time to try because you may have regrets that you didn’t and you’ll remain in the same space for too long.
  • Give yourself more credit and know that your choices are yours.
